Fix it

Grok Bot sign-in problems and SuperGrok linking fixes

Grok Bot signs in with a Cursor account, and a SuperGrok or X Premium+ link is permanent. Find the message on your screen, then the fix for it, in order.

Last verified

On this page

Grok Bot signs in with a Cursor account, and a SuperGrok or X Premium+ subscription counts only once it's linked to that account. When sign-in or linking fails, start from the exact words on your screen: each message has its own cause and its own fix.

#Find the fix for what your screen says

Sign-in and linking fail with many different messages, and two that look alike can have opposite fixes. Choose where you're stuck, then the words on your screen, and you get the cause and the steps in order.

Sign-in and linking: what does your screen say?

Two taps: where you're stuck, then the words on your screen. You get the cause and the steps, in order.

Start at question 1. Each answer links to the next question or to your fix.

Question 1

Where are you stuck?

Question 2, signing in

What does the screen say?

Question 2, plans

What do you pay for?

The thirteen fixes

Sign-in loop

The sign-in won't finish: take five steps in order

A sign-in has two halves. The browser signs you in, then the app picks that session up. These steps clear a stale session on either side.

  1. Keep the app open and finish in the browser.
  2. Update the app, then sign out and back in.
  3. Clear cookies for cursor.com and x.ai, and use a private window.
  4. Sign in at x.ai/bot with the same Cursor account.
  5. Wait 30 to 60 minutes and try again.
  6. Still looping? Write to support.

Don't reinstall the app. It usually doesn't fix a sign-in.

Support only

“Access blocked”: only support can lift it

Cursor has blocked the sign-in, and the block can't be cleared from your side. A phone verification that failed is one cause.

  1. If you were asked to verify a phone number, try the verification once more.
  2. Take a screenshot of the access-blocked screen.
  3. Email hi@cursor.com, and say whether the block appeared at sign-in or while you were linking.

Don't open a second Cursor account and link your subscription there to get round the block. That link could never move back.

Cursor setting

Legacy Privacy Mode: change the setting on Cursor's site

Grok Bot needs cloud storage to run, and Privacy Mode (Legacy) allows none, so the app can't start on that account.

  1. Switch the account to Privacy Mode. Legacy plans and Privacy Mode (Legacy) has the link and what changes.
  2. On a Cursor team, ask your admin: the setting is theirs.
  3. Sign in to Grok Bot again.
Not a sign-in problem

Stuck on setup, or a blank window: your sign-in worked

The app is past sign-in and is waiting for your cloud computer.

  1. If the line is still changing, wait. First setup can take several minutes.
  2. Quit Grok Bot fully and open it again.
  3. On a company network, ask IT to allow *.cursorvm.com and *.*.cursorvm.com. A gateway that inspects traffic stops setup at this point.
  4. Still stuck? Follow Can't reach your computer.

Don't sign out or reinstall. Neither one reaches the computer.

Phone

On a phone: sign in on your computer first

The phone app signs in to the same Cursor account as your computer. A different sign-in method on the phone can start a second, empty account.

  1. Sign in to Grok Bot on your computer first, then on the phone with the same Cursor account.
  2. iPhone or iPad: if the sign-in sheet doesn't offer the method you use on your computer, choose the email option, enter your Cursor account's email address, and use the sign-in link it sends you.
  3. Android: if the app stays on “Waiting for Browser…”, the phone has put it to sleep partway. Open the phone's settings for the Grok Bot app and set its battery use to Unrestricted. Sign in again, and switch straight back to Grok Bot when the browser reads “All set!”. If your default browser is Samsung Internet, make Chrome the default for this sign-in.
  4. With SuperGrok or X Premium+, make the link on your computer. The phone needs no link of its own.
Signed in, messages fail

Authentication error on a signed-in app: update the computer

Your sign-in is fine, so logging out and back in changes nothing. The banner clears when your Bots' computer moves to its current version.

  1. Open Settings > Updates and update Grok Bot's computer. The update removes the apps and packages installed on the computer, and keeps your Bots, files and logins.
  2. Send a short message to any Bot.
  3. Banner still there, or no update waiting? Take the sign-in steps, then write to support.

Don't reinstall the app. The fault isn't in it.

The Cursor side is taken

This Cursor account already has a link

A Cursor account pairs with one Grok or X account, for good. This one is paired with a different Grok or X account than the one you just used.

  1. Read the Signed in as line. If it isn't the Cursor account you meant, click Switch accounts and link from the right one.
  2. If it is the right Cursor account, its link stays with the Grok or X account it's paired with. A Cursor plan on this account gives usage without a link.
  3. Or link your subscription to a different Cursor account. That account starts with no Bots, and the link stays there for good.

Don't wait on support to remove the old link. Support can't unlink or move one.

The Grok side is taken

This Grok account is linked to another Cursor account

Your subscription's usage already sits on a different Cursor account, and it can't move to this one.

  1. Click Switch accounts and sign in with the Cursor account that holds the link. Sign in to Grok Bot with that account from now on.
  2. Not sure which account that is? Click Email the linked account, then check your other inboxes.
Plan

The Grok or X account has no plan that includes Grok Bot

A link carries usage from SuperGrok, SuperGrok Plus, SuperGrok Heavy or X Premium+. SuperGrok Lite, SuperGrok Team, SuperGrok Enterprise and X Premium without the plus don't count.

  1. Check you signed in to the Grok or X account that has the subscription. One bought under another login is on another account.
  2. On Lite, or on X Premium without the plus? Upgrade that same account, then link it again.
  3. Or skip the link: Cursor Pro includes Grok Bot. Pricing has every plan.
After linking

A subscription counts only on the Cursor account it's linked to

The link puts your usage on one Cursor account. The app has to be signed in to that same account, and a new link or a changed plan can take up to 24 hours to reach Weekly usage.

  1. Check which Cursor account the app is in. It must be the one you linked.
  2. Not linked yet? Get to the link page.
  3. Check the subscription is still active on the Grok or X side. Cursor checks it again at each renewal.
  4. Allow up to 24 hours after a link, an upgrade or a downgrade.

Don't link again to hurry it along. Linking again is only for an account that had no qualifying plan.

Cursor plan

A request-based Cursor plan doesn't include Grok Bot

Grok Bot comes with Cursor's usage-based plans. An older plan that counts requests each month is asked to upgrade, even though you pay for Pro.

  1. Decide whether you want to leave the request-based plan. Opting in to usage-based pricing is what turns Grok Bot on.
  2. Legacy plans and Privacy Mode (Legacy) sets the two side by side.
  3. On a team, the plan is your admin's to change.
Account

You're in a different Cursor account

Your plan, your link and your Bots belong to one Cursor account. A different email or sign-in button opens another account, which looks like a brand-new app.

  1. Check which Cursor account the app is in.
  2. Sign out, then sign in with the account that has your plan and your Bots, by the same method you used before.
  3. Right account, and still no Bots? The app may not be reaching your computer. See Can't reach your computer.
  4. Right account, a current paid plan, and still asked to upgrade? Write to support.

Don't create Bots or link a subscription in the empty account.

Open on its own page

The steps in each fix link to the sections below, where the screens are.

#Check which Cursor account you're in

Several fixes start with the same look. Your plan, your link and your Bots all sit on one Cursor account, and the app may be signed in to another.

Click your picture at the bottom left of the app, choose Settings, and find Account at the top of General.

  1. Your name and the email address of the Cursor account this app is signed in to, blurred here.
  2. Add account saves a second Cursor account beside this one.
  3. Sign Out takes this account off this computer.
  • Wrong account, or an app with none of your Bots in it: click Sign Out, then sign in with the right account, by the same method you used when you made it. Signing out removes the account's data from this computer only. Your Bots and chats come back when you sign in again.
  • The browser can disagree with the app. cursor.com may be signed in to a different Cursor account than Grok Bot is. Compare the email addresses before you buy or link anything on the web.

#Fix a sign-in that won't finish

These steps are for a sign-in that loops, stops on an error page, or drops you back at Sign in →. Here is one such page, with the failure in a grey line.

A browser page headed Sign in to Grok Bot with Cursor. A grey notice under the heading reads There was an issue authenticating, above three sign-in buttons for Google, GitHub and Apple

Take the steps in order, and stop as soon as you're in.

  1. Keep the app open and finish in the browser

Leave Grok Bot open while you sign in. Carry on in the browser until the page reads “All set! Feel free to return to Grok Bot.” Then switch back to the app yourself if it doesn't come to the front. The app stops waiting after five minutes, and then you start again from Sign in →.

  2. Update the app, then sign out and back in

In the app, open Settings > Updates and click Check for Updates. Locked out of the app? Install the current version from cursor.com/download/bot. Then sign out and sign in again.

  3. Clear cookies and use a private window

In your browser, clear the cookies for cursor.com and x.ai. Then sign in again in a private or incognito window.

  4. Sign in at x.ai/bot

On a computer, open x.ai/bot in the browser and sign in there with the same Cursor account. Then try the app once more.

  5. Wait 30 to 60 minutes

An error that started today can clear by itself when your session refreshes. Give it 30 to 60 minutes and try again.

Reinstalling the app usually doesn't fix a sign-in, so you can skip that. If the last step fails too, write to support.

#“Authentication error” on an app that's signed in

One message looks like a sign-in problem and isn't. A red banner above the message box reads Authentication error, with “If you are logged in, try logging out and back in.” under it, while the app still shows your account and your Bots.

The left half of a red banner with a warning triangle. Its title is Authentication error and the line under it reads If you are logged in, try logging out and back in.
The banner shows each time you send a message. Logging out and back in doesn't clear it. Image: @LubaYudasina on X

The fix is on your Bots' computer. A computer update keeps your Bots, files and logins, and removes the apps and packages installed on the computer. Open Settings > Updates, and if Update Grok Bot's Computer offers an Update button, click it. Not responding shows that screen.

With no update waiting, or with the banner still there afterwards, take the five steps above.

Linking happens on one web page, and when it fails that page says why in a red line. Read the line first, because it tells you which of your two accounts is the problem.

  1. The red line names the case. Here the Cursor account already has a link.
  2. Signed in as is the Cursor account you're linking to.
  3. Switch accounts signs you in to a different Cursor account.
Image: @ilyusha on X

Three rules explain every red line.

  • One to one, for good. A Cursor account pairs with one Grok or X account. The pairing can't be undone or moved to another Cursor account, by you or by support.
  • Usage follows the subscription. Upgrade or downgrade on the Grok or X side and Weekly usage follows, which can take up to 24 hours. You don't link again.
  • One reason to link again. The account you linked had no plan that includes Grok Bot, such as SuperGrok Lite, and you've since upgraded it.

#Get back to the link page

Once you're inside the app, Settings has no link option. There are three ways back.

  • Quit Grok Bot fully and open it again. While your account has no access, the app opens on Get Started with Grok Bot, with Link Grok Account. Closing the window isn't enough: here's how to quit fully.
  • On a free account, open Settings > Usage & Billing. The page has a Get Access with Grok button.
  • In a browser, open cursor.com/promos/super-grok while signed in to cursor.com with the same Cursor account.

Set up Grok Bot walks through the link itself.

#Legacy plans and Privacy Mode (Legacy)

Two older Cursor settings keep Grok Bot switched off, even on an account that pays. Both are changed on Cursor's website.

Two settings that block Grok Bot

Request-based plan Privacy Mode (Legacy)
What it is An older Cursor plan that counts requests each month An older privacy setting that allows no data storage
What you see The app asks you to upgrade, though you already pay for Pro A message about Legacy Privacy Mode when you sign in
Why it blocks Grok Bot comes with usage-based plans only Grok Bot needs cloud storage to run
The fix Opt in to usage-based pricing on cursor.com Switch to Privacy Mode in Cursor's privacy settings
What you give up The request-based plan The no-storage setting. With Privacy Mode on, your data still isn't used for training
  • On a Cursor team, both settings belong to your admin. Ask them.
  • A team on a request-based plan can't use a personal SuperGrok link in its place, and neither can an Enterprise seat.

#What only support can clear

Some account problems can't be fixed from your side. Email hi@cursor.com when one of these is true.

  • The sign-in page reads “Access blocked, please contact support.”
  • A sign-in still loops after all five steps.
  • You pay for a current Cursor plan, you're signed in to the account that has it, and the app still asks you to upgrade.

Support can't unlink a link or move it to another Cursor account, so don't wait on a ticket for that.

Put these in the email, and leave passwords and sign-in codes out of it.

Put these in the email

Once you're in, the next step is a Bot of your own.

Can I use two Grok Bot accounts on one computer?

Yes. Open the account menu at the bottom left and choose Add account. Each account keeps its own Bots and data on this computer, and the account menu gains Switch account to move between them.

Does signing in to Grok Bot count as another computer on my Cursor account?

Yes. Cursor limits how many computers can use one account, and Grok Bot counts as one when you sign in. Its cloud computer can count as another. If you hit the limit, sign out on devices you don't use: the extra ones drop off the count within a day, and access comes back by itself.

Can I change the email address on my account?

No. The email on a Cursor account can't be changed. A new email means a new Cursor account, which starts with no Bots, and a link doesn't move to it.
